Leverkusen beat Mainz to gain on Dortmund

Bayer 04 Leverkusen made the most of a rare defeat for Borussia Dortmund with a 1-0 win at 1. FSV Mainz 05 which takes them to within nine points of the Bundesliga leaders.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen are nine points behind Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund following a 1-0 win at 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Long-time pacesetters Dortmund were beaten 1-0 by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday and Leverkusen did not pass up the opportunity to close on the summit. The visitors were made to work hard for victory at fifth-placed Mainz, though, Renato Augusto's fierce shot eight minutes from time the difference.

VfB Stuttgart, meanwhile, are out of the relegation zone and up to 13th having prevailed 2-1 at FC St Pauli, themselves now in the bottom three. Sven Schipplock's 88th-minute strike proved decisive for Bruno Labbadia's team.
