Pizarro pounces to send Bremen second

A Claudio Pizarro double helped SV Werder Bremen defeat nine-man Hertha BSC Berlin 2-1 and move up into second, on a day when 1. FC Köln beat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 2-0.

SV Werder Bremen moved up to second thanks to a 2-1 triumph against nine-man Hertha BSC Berlin, on a day when 1. FC Köln picked up their third win of the campaign at home to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Bremen went into their game knowing victory would lift them above VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, but they were trailing inside three minutes as Adrián Ramos struck for Hertha. Claudio Pizarro levelled the scores midway through the first half, and the momentum shifted even further in the hosts' direction when Christian Lell and Ramos received their marching orders in quick succession either side of the hour. Despite valiant defending, Hertha could only hold on for so long, Pizarro scoring the winning goal in added time.

In Sunday's other game, Köln moved up to tenth after building on their impressive 4-1 defeat of Bayer 04 Leverkusen last time out. The home side started the match in frenetic fashion and went ahead through Mato Jajalo (20) before Lukas Podolski (64) sealed the points after the break.
