FC Bayern München's six-match Bundesliga winning streak came to end as they were held to a goalless draw at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, but SV Werder Bremen and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach missed their chance of going level with the Bavarian pacesetters.
Mohammed Abdellaoue's hat-trick took his tally to six in five league matches and gave Hannover 96 a 3-2 win against Bremen, who responded through Marko Arnautović and Claudio Pizarro. Mönchengladbach remain on 16 points alongside Bremen, three behind Bayern, after a 1-0 defeat at SC Freiburg, Johannes Flum grabbing the decisive goal 19 minutes in.
Bayern have hit 21 goals so far this season but were unable to break Hoffenheim's resistance, with Isaac Vorsah in particular showing impressive defiance to stop Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller gaining the points for Bayern.
Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, hit a hat-trick of his own as titleholders Borussia Dortmund moved up to sixth with a 4-0 home win against FC Augsburg. Elsewhere, 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FSV Mainz 05 drew 3-3, while two Klaas-Jan Huntelaar goals helped FC Schalke 04 to a 2-1 win at Hamburger SV, who are bottom.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen defeated Vfl Wolfsburg 3-1, two goals from Pierre-Michelle Lasogga helped Hertha BSC Berlin to a 3-0 home victory against 1. FC Köln, and VfB Stuttgart beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 2-0.
