Having won just one of their last four matches, FC Bayern München tuned up for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against FC Basel 1893 with a dazzling return to form, routing TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 7-1.
Jupp Heynckes' side scored five times inside the first 35 minutes as Mario Gomez (5, 35) and Arjen Robben (12, 29) struck either side of Toni Kroos's effort (18). Gomez completed his 11th career Bundesliga hat-trick (48) before Franck Ribéry (58) netted as Hoffenheim, for whom Luiz Gustavo scored an own goal, became the second side after SC Freiburg to concede seven to the Bavarian outfit this term.
Freiburg fared considerably better against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach than they did on that fateful September day, a goalless draw leaving their hosts three points adrift of second-placed Bayern, who themselves trail Borussia Dortmund by five after the champions were held 0-0 at FC Augsburg.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen, beaten 7-1 by FC Barcelona on Wednesday, concluded a miserable week with a 3-2 loss at VfL Wolfsburg, with Patrick Helmes (32), Ashkan Dejagah (45) and Michal Kadlec, at the wrong end, on target. Elsewhere, there were narrow home wins for 1. FC Köln (1-0) and 1. FSV Mainz 05 (2-1) against Hertha BSC Berlin and 1. FC Nürnberg respectively.
