VfL Wolfsburg have sacked coach Felix Magath following a poor start to their Bundesliga campaign, with Lorenz-Günther Köstner taking temporary command.
Saturday's 2-0 home loss to SC Freiburg was the club's seventh game without a win and fourth straight defeat, leaving them bottom of the German table after eight matches. Wolfsburg have elected to cut loose former Hamburger SV attacking midfielder Magath, 59, with reserve team boss Köstner, 60, taking the reins for a second time, having previously stood in in early 2010.
Magath became the only coach to win successive domestic doubles in Germany, leading FC Bayern München to glory in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Then, in 2008/09, he caused a major upset by lifting the league title with Wolfsburg before moving to FC Schalke 04. Capped 43 times by West Germany, he returned for a second spell at Wolfsburg in March 2011.
