Leverkusen bring Bayern back down to earth

FC Bayern München's flawless start to the Bundesliga season is over after they suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Bayer 04 Leverkusen, on a day when Eintracht Frankfurt also lost.

FC Bayern München's perfect start to the Bundesliga season is over after Sidney Sam's deflected header three minutes from time earned Bayer 04 Leverkusen a 2-1 win at the home of the leaders.

Bayern went into the match having put together a record eight consecutive victories but they found themselves behind three minutes before the interval when Stefan Kiessling capped a fine counterattack by sweeping in an André Schürrle cross at the far post.

The hosts responded via Mario Mandžukić's eighth league goal this term, yet the final word fell to Sam as his header cannoned off Jérôme Boateng and flew past the wrong-footed Manuel Neuer to bring Leverkusen their first success in Munich in over 23 years.

Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt were unable to take advantage as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart, Vedad Ibišević making the difference six minutes from time after Alexander Meier had earlier equalised for the visitors following Christian Gentner's opener. Eintracht remain five points shy of Bayern, and a point behind second-placed FC Schalke 04.

Also on Sunday, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach battled back from 2-0 down to prevail 3-2 at Hannover 96. Jan Schlaudraff and Mame Diouf put the home side in a seemingly healthy position before Álvaro Domínguez, Roel Brouwers and Juan Arango all registered in the final 20 minutes for ninth-placed Mönchengladbach.
