Ten-man Bremen win, Wolfsburg triumph away

Ten-man SV Werder Bremen moved up to seventh after coming from behind to defeat Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895, who dropped into the bottom three following a win for VfL Wolfsburg.

SV Werder Bremen climbed to seventh in the Bundesliga after coming from behind to beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895 2-1 despite having a man sent off.

Starting the day in 12th, it appeared that Thomas Schaaf's side would remain in the bottom half when Jens Langeneke fired a penalty down the middle to give the visitors a tenth-minute lead. The hosts equalised shortly after the interval when Nils Petersen turned in an excellent cross from Lukas Schmitz, before Düsseldorf were given renewed hope when Bremen's Assani Lukimya was shown a second yellow.

However, with eight minutes remaining, Kevin De Bruyne – on loan from Chelsea FC – registered his fourth goal of the season to seal victory for Bremen. The result dropped Düsseldorf into the bottom three, where they replaced VfL Wolfsburg, who prevailed 3-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in Sunday's other match.

Wolfsburg earned their third win in four Bundesliga games as first-half goals from Makoto Hasebe and Bas Dost set them on their way to victory at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. Naldo's free-kick increased their lead after the break and, despite Eren Derdiyok's late consolation, Wolfsburg held on to go 13th, one place above Hoffenheim.
