Dieter Hecking has left 1. FC Nürnberg to take over as the new coach of VfL Wolfsburg on a deal that runs until 2016.
Lorenz-Günther Köstner has been in caretaker charge of Wolfsburg since Felix Magath parted company with the club in October. Hecking has now assumed the role on a permanent basis, bringing an end to his three-year spell in charge of Nürnberg. Hecking will be presented in the coming days according to a statement on the official Wolfsburg website.
"I had a good conversation with [sporting director] Klaus Allofs," said 48-year-old Hecking. "He explained why he absolutely wanted to have me there and pointed out the potential. It's another step for me as a manager. Of course the financial and family aspects play a role too."
With the German top flight currently on its winter break, Wolfsburg are 15th, a place and a point below Nürnberg. Hecking's first game with his new employers will be at home to VfB Stuttgart on 19 January.
