Augsburg dent Eintracht's top-four aspirations

Eintracht Frankfurt's hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League spot suffered a blow in a 2-0 loss at FC Augsburg, and there was disappointment too for VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Eintracht Frankfurt's hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Bundesliga and claiming a UEFA Champions League spot took a blow as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at FC Augsburg, who boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop.

Armin Veh's side would have moved within a point of fourth-placed FC Schalke 04 with a victory, but Ji Dong-won struck both goals for their 16th-placed opponents. The South Korean international finished into the bottom corner from Jan Morávek's ball on 27 minutes, and Markus Weinzierl's men threatened to double their lead just five minutes later when Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker sent a penalty over the bar.

Eintracht were unable to make the most of that reprieve, however, and Dong-won struck a second after the break to seal the result. Augsburg now lie three points shy of Fortuna Düsseldorf, who occupy the lowest position of safety above the relegation zone.

In Sunday's other game, VfB Stuttgart inflicted a 2-0 defeat on VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to leave Die Fohlen a point outside the UEFA Europa League spots. Defender Álvaro Domínguez turned into his own net on 28 minutes and Christian Gentner hit the target shortly afterwards to lift Stuttgart up to 12th.
