Wolfsburg land Gustavo from Bayern

Versatile Brazil midfielder Luiz Gustavo has left FC Bayern München for VfL Wolfsburg on a five-year contract and said the club "wanted to sign me from the start".

Brazilian international midfielder Luiz Gustavo has left FC Bayern München and joined VfL Wolfsburg on a five-year contract.

Gustavo's departure had been looming for a couple of weeks, with Bayern having a surplus of midfielders, and Wolfsburg have agreed to pay a fee reported to be between €15m and €20m. Also able to play in central defence and at left-back, Gustavo began at SC Corinthians Alagoano before moving to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in 2007. He joined Bayern during the 2011 winter transfer window, last season helping them to victory in the UEFA Champions League and completing the German double.

"We're very pleased to have convinced Luiz with our plans for VfL and managed to keep him in the Bundesliga," sporting director Klaus Allofs said. Coach Dieter Hecking added: "This is a clear signal. We are trying to accomplish something here." The 26-year-old, who helped Brazil to 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup victory on home soil this summer and will link up with compatriots Diego, Naldo and Felipe Lopes at Wolfsburg, had several other offers but explained why he joined the Bundesliga champions of 2008/09.

"Wolfsburg wanted to sign me from the start, which is one of the reasons why I am here," Gustavo said. "They have a very good project at Wolfsburg, which is why I made the decision to start a new life here." Bayern's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "We'd like to thank Luiz Gustavo for his two and a half years in Munich. His calm, but always friendly and very professional, attitude made him a lot of friends at this club. He was always reliable and had a hand in winning the treble last season."
