Niersbach celebrates DFB re-election

Wolfgang Niersbach has been unanimously re-elected president of the German Football Association until 2016, with the 62-year-old receiving all 259 votes in Nuremberg.

Wolfgang Niersbach has been unanimously re-elected as president of the German Football Association (DFB) until 2016, with the 62-year-old receiving all 259 votes at the organisation's general assembly in Nuremberg.

The former sports journalist started working for the DFB as head of media in 1988. Later, as vice-president of the local organising committee, he played a major part in the success of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Niersbach became DFB general secretary in October 2007 and succeeded Dr Theo Zwanziger as president in March of last year.

"I am very happy about this conclusive vote and the trust I have received," Niersbach said. "It is great to have the absolute support of the state and regional associations, as well as the league association.

"For me this is confirmation of my work and an incentive to follow the path we have taken. It is with true belief that I stand for the unity of football. Volunteering, professionals, grassroots, elite – together we are strong."
