Hannover 96 have confirmed the appointment of former Turkish international Tayfun Korkut as their new coach.
Tayfun, capped 42 times as a player, will begin his tenure when Hannover resume training after the winter break on 5 January. He has signed a contract until June 2016. "This appointment is an informed decision for the future of Hannover 96," said sporting director Dirk Dufner. "In Tayfun Korkut, we have gone for a young, well qualified and highly motivated coach, who has totally convinced us with his personality and CV."
Tayfun succeeds Mirko Slomka, who was dismissed last week after overseeing a run of just one win in 11 Bundesliga games, leaving Hannover 13th in the German top flight. "I would like to thank Hannover 96 a great deal for the faith they have shown in me by giving me this chance," said Tayfun, who counts Fenerbahçe SK, Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Beşiktaş JK among the clubs he represented as a player. "There is a very demanding but fascinating task ahead of us, one I'm very much looking forward to."
Tayfun held youth coaching roles at Real Sociedad, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart, before being appointed assistant to Turkey national team coach Abdullah Avci in January 2012.
