Day of gloom for Leverkusen and Dortmund

Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost at struggling SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund were thwarted by FC Augsburg, on a day when 1. FC Nürnberg ended their long wait for a Bundesliga win.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund dropped further off the pace at the top of the Bundesliga, while 1. FC Nürnberg's long wait for a first league win of the season finally came to an end.

FC Bayern München won 2-0 at third-placed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday night, and there was more good news for Josep Guardiola's side as second-ranked Leverkusen and Dortmund, in fourth, let points slip. Leverkusen were in front twice at SC Freiburg, but Admir Mehmedi's dream strike cancelled out Lars Bender's early opener, and while Simon Rolfes responded following a 36th-minute corner, Jonathan Schmid's deflected free-kick and Felix Klaus's last-gasp finish earned a 3-2 win for the Bundesliga strugglers.

Dortmund were similarly frustrated by FC Augsburg. Sven Bender opened the scoring, then put past his own goalkeeper to equalise for the visitors. Nuri Şahin put Jürgen Klopp's side ahead again with 24 minutes remaining, but Augsburg's Ji Dong-won marked his return to his old club – on loan from Sunderland AFC – with the equaliser against the team he has agreed to join in the summer.

Elsewhere, there was relief at last for Nürnberg, who secured 11 draws but no wins in their first 17 Bundesliga games, as they put four without reply past TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to start 2014 with a bang. Benedikt Saller struck late on to earn 1. FSV Mainz a 2-1 success at VfB Stuttgart while VfL Wolfsburg failed to make pressure tell at home against Hannover 96, succumbing to a 3-1 defeat. Alexander Meier scored the only goal as Eintracht Frankfurt got the better of Hertha BSC Berlin in the late game.
