Leverkusen and Schalke stay on track

Second-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen came from behind to sink VfB Stuttgart 2-1, while FC Schalke 04 overcame VfL Wolfsburg to move into the UEFA Champions League places.

Eren Derdiyok scored a late winner as Bayer 04 Leverkusen came back from behind to see off VfB Stuttgart 2-1 and move back within ten points of FC Bayern München.

The second-placed side fell behind when Moritz Leitner curled in a superb debut Bundesliga goal on 12 minutes, but, as against Bayern last time out, Stuttgart could not hold onto their lead. Stefan Kiessling equalised with his tenth strike of the campaign and Derdiyok settled the game with six minutes to go as the Werkself lifted themselves four points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.

Elsewhere, FC Schalke 04 beat VfL Wolfsburg by the same scoreline to climb into the UEFA Champions League places. Wolfsburg were aiming to bounce back from their derby defeat by Hannover 96 and looked set for a point after Maximilian Arnold cancelled out Felipe Santana's inadvertent early opener, despite losing Daniel Caligiuri to a 50th-minute red card. Kevin-Prince Boateng had the final word, however, making the difference nine minutes from time.

The result lifted Schalke ahead of VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, who lost 3-1 at Hannover in the evening kick-off, Mame Diouf posting two late goals. Also on Saturday, 1. FSV Mainz 05's South Korean pair Ja-Cheol Koo and Park Joo Ho both scored to down SC Freiburg 2-0, while Hamburger SV remain in the relegation zone following a 3-0 loss at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. As for FC Augsburg, they recovered from a third-minute own goal to beat ten-man SV Werder Bremen 3-1.
