Schalke sink Hannover to bolster European claims

FC Schalke 04 strengthened their hold on fourth place in the Bundesliga courtesy of a 2-0 victory against Hannover 96, after FC Augsburg prevailed 4-1 at ten-man VfB Stuttgart.

FC Schalke 04 tightened their grip on fourth spot in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 triumph against Hannover 96, after FC Augsburg posted an impressive win at VfB Stuttgart.

With fifth-placed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach suffering a third consecutive defeat at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Friday, Schalke knew victory would take them four points clear in Germany's final UEFA Champions League berth. They duly took advantage via a pair of goals in quick succession at the end of the first half, Jefferson Farfán breaking the deadlock before 18-year-old Max Meyer made sure of the result.

Also on Sunday, Augsburg lifted themselves up to eighth at ten-man Stuttgart. Arkadiusz Milik handed the visitors the lead against the run of play on 35 minutes and they notched a second before the break through André Hahn, with Stuttgart suffering a further blow when Vedad Ibišević was dismissed following an altercation with Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker shortly after the restart. Hahn and Tobias Werner subsequently added to Augsburg's goal tally, either side of Konstantin Rausch's consolation effort.
