Schalke hold third, Bayern vent

A 2-0 away win edged FC Schalke 04 closer to a place in next season's UEFA Champions League group stage while FC Bayern München shunted Hamburger SV closer to relegation.

FC Schalke 04 are within a nose of Germany's third UEFA Champions League group stage slot following a 2-0 win at SC Freiburg as the top six recording victories.

Three-points clear of fourth-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Schaalke ot a major lift after 13 minutes when 19-year-old left-back Kaan Ayhan curled in his first Bundesliga goal. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar then hit the crossbar, but his luck turned on 65 minutes when his shot from distance beat Oliver Baumann with the help of a substantial deflection. Felipe Santana's late dismissal did little to dampen the party mood.

Leverkusen won 2-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt, Gonzalo Castro and Emre Can both on target in the first half. However, VfL Wolfsburg remain within a point of fourth, Ivica Olić's late goal earning a 2-1 success at VfB Stuttgart. Sixth-placed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, won 3-1 against 1. FSV Mainz 05, a result which guarantees European football.

Borussia Dortmund beat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 3-2, and champions FC Bayern München vented some of their fury at missing out on the UEFA Champions League final with a 4-1 win at Hamburger SV, whose only chance of continuing their 53-year stay in the Bundesliga is a relegation play-off. TSV Eintracht Braunschweig, who lost 1-0 at home to FC Augsburg, and 1. FC Nürnberg – who went down 2-0 to Hannover 96 – face a similarly stark situation.
