Bundesliga leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen will be without Simon Rolfes for "several weeks" after the German international underwent surgery to repair cartilage in the same knee that has already sidelined him for three months this season.
The 28-year-old had been out of action since mid-October before this month returning to make successive substitute appearances against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Though the length of his forthcoming absence is yet to be confirmed, doubts have been raised as to the 21-cap midfielder's availability for this summer's FIFA World Cup. "This is a huge shock for all of us," said Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler . "He was really looking forward to the World Cup finals. We need to build him up now and support him as much as we possibly can. He needs to think positive."
