Mitroglou and Mirallas acclaimed in Greece

Kostas Mitroglou and his one-time Olympiacos FC club-mate Kevin Mirallas received the top prizes as Greece celebrated its stars of the 2011/12 season on Monday night.

Olympiacos FC forward Kostas Mitroglou and his former club-mate Kevin Mirallas received the most prestigious prizes in Athens at the celebration of the 2011/12 season staged by the Panhellenic Association of Professional Footballers (PSAP) – the most established award ceremony in Greek football.

Mitroglou earned the prize for the Greek Player of the Season thanks to a 17-goal haul while on loan at Atromitos FC, which helped the Peristeri-based side reach the Greek Cup final and earn a place in the league play-offs. "I have been striving to improve myself and become a better player," the 24-year-old said. "I believe that I am on the right track."

Belgian forward Mirallas, meanwhile, was honoured as the best foreign player of the campaign, additionally taking a prize as the Super League's top scorer, having registered 20 times before moving from Olympiacos to Everton FC in the summer.

Panathinaikos FC's Orestis Karnezis took the top goalkeeper award, while forward Panagiotis Vlachodimos was named best young player, having impressed with Xanthi FC before signing for Olympiacos at the end of the season. Success with Atromitos saw Giorgos Donis – now at PAOK FC – acclaimed as best Greek coach of the season with Spaniard Ernesto Valverde's double success with Olympiacos earning him the nod as the top foreign coach, though he has since moved on to Valencia CF.

Finally, the PSAP gave a special award to Greece's Under-19 side and their coach Kostas Tsanas for reaching the final of the 2011/12 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, where they lost 1-0 to Spain in Tallinn.
