The regular season of the Greek Super League has ended with Olympiacos CFP finishing on top, two points clear of AEK Athens FC.
However, a legal dispute means the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) have been unable to confirm the final standings or officially award Olympiacos the title. The problem stems from the 3 February match between bottom side Apollon Kalamarias FC and Olympiacos, which the Thessaloniki outfit won 1-0. The three points were awarded to Olympiacos, though, with Kalamaria being deducted a further point by the EPO after they fielded a player – Roman Wallner – who had already represented two clubs this season: Scottish sides Falkirk FC and Hamilton Academical FC.
Standings in limbo
Kalamaria have now taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, filing a petition for interim measures with the verdict expected on Monday. If they are successful, a final decision will come in May leaving the designation of champions and new play-off system in limbo until then. If the final verdict of the CAS is in favour of Kalamaria, AEK will be crowned champions as Olympiacos will have three points removed from their final total. The Red and Whites will take the title if the EPO's decision is upheld by the CAS.
On the pitch, both Olympiacos and AEK Athens won their last game of the season. The Piraeus outfit recorded a 3-1 home success against Iraklis FC with two goals from Konstantinos Mitroglou and one from Predrag Djordjević while Rivaldo and Ismael Blanco were on target for AEK in their 2-0 victory over Asteras Tripolis FC, a result which dropped them out of the play-offs. Pending the aforementioned confirmation, this would be Olympiacos's 36th league title and their eleventh in the last 12 seasons.
Panathinaikos FC, Aris Thessaloniki FC and Panionios GSS all won on the last day and will be three of the four sides participating in the play-offs to determine European qualification. At the other end of the table, Atromitos FC's loss to Panionios saw them join already relegated GAS Veria and Kalamaria as the sides who will be playing in Division B next season.
