Striking legend Varga's death shocks Hungary

Regarded as one of the greatest Hungarian players of all time, former Ferencvárosi TC, Aberdeen FC and AFC Ajax striker Zoltán Varga has died unexpectedly at the age of 65.

Hungarian football is in mourning following the unexpected death of one-time national-team striker Zoltán Varga at the age of 65.

The former Ferencvárosi TC, Hertha BSC Berlin, Aberdeen FC, AFC Ajax, BV Borussia Dortmund, FC Augsburg and KAA Gent player collapsed and died while playing football in Budapest on Friday. Regarded as one of his nation's finest talents, Varga was a bronze medalist at the 1964 UEFA European Chamionship and was a member of the Hungary team that won Olympic gold at the 1964 games in Japan.

At Ferencváros, he won four domestic titles and the 1967/68 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the non-UEFA affiliated precursor to the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League. After hanging up his boots in 1977, Varga moved into coaching with Ferencváros, Budapest Honvéd FC, Dunaferr FC, Diósgyőri VTK and Győri ETO FC among others.
