Debrecen VSC have secured a domestic double after being crowned champions of Hungary for the sixth time in eight seasons, taking the title by beating Pécsi MFC 4-0.

Secure in the knowledge that two points from their last three matches would seal the title, the hosts took the lead on 24 minutes when Pécsi defender József Nagy headed past his own goalkeeper.

The result was then set in stone shortly before the break, Selim Bouadla scoring direct from a free-kick before turning provider for Ádám Bódi to make it three. A fourth duly arrived on 55 minutes as Tamás Kulcsár converted after Adamo Coulibaly's strike had been parried.

The result took Debrecen out of the reach of nearest challengers Videoton FC, and captain Péter Szakály was understandably delighted. "First and foremost, I'd like to thank the management, the coaching staff, my team-mates and the supporters that I can be the captain of a title-winning team," he said.

"We're approaching the end of a wonderful season – everyone played their part. We still have goals and would like to finish the season unbeaten. Debrecen is an island of calm, but I don't think it will be that quiet at Saturday night's party."

Should the capital side avoid defeat at neighbours Budapest Honvéd FC and at home against Szombathelyi Haladás, they will become the first Hungarian team to go through a season undefeated since Vasas SC in 1966.
