Újpest record ninth Hungarian Cup triumph

Újpest FC defender Róbert Litauszki spoke of "an unforgettable experience" after his side defeated Diósgyőri VTK 4-3 on penalties at the end of a 1-1 draw to claim the Hungarian Cup.

Újpest FC have won the Hungarian Cup for the ninth time thanks to a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory against Diósgyőri VTK following a 1-1 draw at the Ferenc Puskás Stadium in Budapest.

Nebojša Vignjević's side took a sixth-minute lead when Diósgyőr's András Gosztonyi turned a free-kick from Balázs Balogh past goalkeeper Ivan Radoš and into his own net. That goal looked like being sufficient for Újpest to celebrate victory in regulation time, but a 91st-minute equaliser from Patrik Bacsa, following a cross by Dávid Barczi, necessitated an additional half an hour.

Diósgyőr's hopes were not helped by the dismissal of Tamás Kádár in the 95th minute, the Hungary defender receiving a second yellow card for handball. However, with Újpest unable to breach the Miskolc side's well-drilled defence, spot kicks were eventually required. Újpest then converted each of their attempts, while William Alves hit the bar for their opponents and Senad Husić fired over to give Újpest their first Hungarian Cup since 2002.

"It's an unforgettable experience to win the Hungarian Cup in front of our wonderful fans," said Újpest defender Róbert Litauszki. "Our supporters really deserve this, since Újpest haven't won any silverware for 12 years. For the past six months, our coach has been telling us we would win the cup, and we have done.

"When Diósgyőr scored their late equaliser, I thought of last night's Champions League final. We were halfway to going the same way as Atlético – but only half. The sending-off did influence the game towards the end. I've been here at Újpest for ten years, and this is by far my greatest success."

"It's a wonderful feeling to have taken this opportunity – that we did it, won the cup and made so many people happy who have waited so long," added Vignjević. "The players were fantastic, and they absolutely deserve this triumph. I'd like to congratulate our opponents as well, especially for their late equaliser; they also played well, but unfortunately one team had to lose. This match was a good advert for Hungarian football."
