Tony Fitzgerald was involved with a number of football clubs in his native Cork and was just 16 years old when he took on his first administrative role with Blues United FC.
Having served with the regional Munster Football Association he served as chairman of the Football Association of Ireland youth committee and was in Cyprus to see the Republic of Ireland side, coached by Brian Kerr, win the UEFA Under-18 title in 1998. "It was a moment I never expected to see in my lifetime - Ireland winning a major European championship," he said.
Elected vice-president of the FAI in 2010, he succeeded Paddy McCaul as president in July 2014. "My ambition in my role as President would be to see Ireland qualifying for major tournaments like the UEFA European Championships and the World Cup again. The lift those tournaments give the whole country is unbelievable. I am also very proud of how much development women's football has made in recent years in Ireland with performance and skill levels now so high and it would be great to build on that," he says.
