After leading the club from the Italian third division to Serie A in two seasons, coach Pierpaolo Bisoli has left AC Cesena to replace Massimiliano Allegri at Cagliari Calcio.
The 43-year-old former midfielder helped Cesena to return to the Italian top flight after 19 years but decided not to lead them in their first season back in Serie A, claiming he "couldn't give more here; I need new challenges". He will now return to Cagliari, where he spent six seasons as a player from 1991 to 1997, playing 164 games for the Rossoblù and scoring five goals.
In 1993/94, Bisoli helped Cagliari to reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners FC Internazionale Milano. He started his coaching career as Dino Zoff's assistant at ACF Fiorentina in 2004/05 and then took charge of AC Prato and Foligno Calcio before joining Cesena. Cagliari finished 16th in the 20-team Serie A last season.
