Lazio restate leadership credentials

S.S. Lazio defeated Cagliari Calcio 2-1 to strengthen their hold on the Serie A summit, with second-placed FC Internazionale Milano forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against UC Sampdoria.

S.S. Lazio continue to hold sway in Serie A after a 2-1 home victory against Cagliari Calcio ensured them a four-point lead over FC Internazionale Milano, who drew 1-1 with UC Sampdoria.

Lazio's fourth consecutive league success means they are now five points clear of AC Milan, who are due in action away against SSC Napoli on Monday. Sergio Floccari opened the scoring on 21 minutes and then turned provider for Stefano Mauri eight minutes after the interval, shortly before Alessandro Matri hit a consolation for struggling Cagliari.

Goal difference alone separates the beaten visitors from Parma FC, who nonetheless increased the pressure on 14th-placed AS Roma by playing out a goalless draw that leaves the capital outfit a mere point above the danger zone. There was frustration for Juventus too as they were held 0-0 at 16th-placed Bologna FC, while Inter salvaged a point against Sampdoria thanks to Samuel Eto'o's 15th goal in his last 12 games for club and country.

AC Chievo Verona climbed one spot higher than Juve into fourth thanks to Cyril Théréau's added-time decider in a 2-1 home triumph against AC Cesena, who ended the game with nine men. US Città di Palermo likewise had Andrea Coda dismissed as they suffered a first defeat in five outings by succumbing 2-1 at Udinese Calcio.
