Diego Simeone replaces Giampaolo at Catania

Former Argentina midfielder Diego Simeone has been appointed the new coach of Calcio Catania following the departure of Marco Giampaolo from the struggling Serie A club.

Calcio Catania have appointed Diego Simeone as their new coach following the departure of Marco Giampaolo from the Serie A strugglers by mutual consent.

Simeone, 40, has agreed a deal running until summer 2012 with the Silician club, currently 15th and three points above the relegation zone. Giampaolo was appointed at the start of this season at a club who came a creditable 13th in 2009/10.

In charge of Argentinian club CA San Lorenzo until last April, Simeone – at one time his nation's most-capped player with 106 appearances – spent a total of 13 seasons of his career as a midfielder in Italy, first with AC Pisa Calcio 1909 and then at FC Internazionale Milano and S.S. Lazio. Before his time with San Lorenzo, his coaching career had already taken in spells at Racing Club de Avellaneda, Estudiantes de La Plata and CA River Plate.
