A 2-0 home win against AS Cesena lifted SSC Napoli to within three points of Serie A leaders AC Milan after the Rossoneri were held 1-1 at Genoa CFC.
Milan made a promising start at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and, when Pato pounced just before the half-hour, the Diavolo's title charge looked to be staying the course. However, the visitors could find no answer to Antonio Floro Flores's equaliser (45+1) for Genoa, which gave Napoli the chance to make amends for their midweek defeat by AC Chievo Verona. Edinson Cavani's 18th league goal of the season after 13 minutes set the Partenopei on their way, before José Ernesto Sosa struck in added time.
FC Internazionale Milano are now third after they completed a thrilling 5-3 victory against AS Roma, two goals from Samuel Eto'o helping the hosts into a 4-1 lead before the visitors – down to ten men following Nicolás Burdisso's 62nd-minute dismissal – attempted an ultimately fruitless comeback. Two points behind Inter in fourth, S.S. Lazio could only draw 1-1 at home with Chievo.
Elsewhere, US Città di Palermo are up to fifth thanks to a 4-2 success at struggling US Lecce, while there were home wins for Bologna FC and Brescia Calcio, 1-0 against Catania Calcio and 2-0 against AS Bari respectively.
