Italy round-up: Clinical Udinese sink Chievo

Udinese Calcio continued their fine away record with clinical 2-1 victory over AC Chievo Verona.

Udinese Calcio continued their fine away record with clinical 2-1 victory over AC Chievo Verona at the Marc'Antonio Bentegodi stadium on Saturday.

Winless streak
First-half strikes from Per Kroldrup and Roberto Muzzi were enough to sink Chievo. Seventeen minutes in, David Pizarro whipped a cross from the right into the box where Kroldrup was on hand to finish crisply. Just six minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage. From a counterattack, Gonzalo Martins cut a cross back to the edge of the area from where Muzzi fired the ball past Cristiano Lupatelli.

Chance wasted
After looking sluggish early on, Chievo eventually forced their way into the match as the half wore on, twice going close. Just before the interval, an Eriberto flick found Simone Perrotta at the far post but in trying to switch the ball to his stronger foot, the chance was gone.

Tightened their grip
But that was as good as it got for Chievo as the visitors tightened their grip on the game in the second half with defender Hector Pineda seeing his effort cleared off the line.

Keeper sent off
Their composure did slip in the closing moments, with Federico Cossato holding off Kroldrup in the box to pull one back in the 89th minute. There was still time for more drama, however, when Udinese goalkeeper Luigi Turci picked up his second caution for time-wasting and was dismissed in the final minute.

Position consolidated
The result sees Chievo, who have the best away record in Serie A, stay fourth on 37 points, seven points behind league leaders AS Roma. Udinese consolidated their mid-table position on 29 points, level with S.S. Lazio. All the other Serie A matches this weekend will be played on Sunday.
