De Rossi follows his heart to remain at Roma

"I'm not staying to be a tourist and look at the Coliseum," said AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi after opting to renew his contract with the Giallorossi until June 2017.

Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi has extended his 12-year association with AS Roma for a further five seasons after protracted negotiations concluded at the weekend.

"I'm not staying to be a tourist and look at the Coliseum," said the 28-year-old after deciding to renew his deal – containing no release clause, and which had been due to expire this summer – with the Giallorossi until June 2017. "I have chosen with my heart but also with my head because I firmly believe in this project."

De Rossi made his first-team debut in 2001 under Fabio Capello at the age of 18 and has since become a mainstay of the Roma midfield, scoring 31 goals in 267 Serie A appearances and helping his side lift the Coppa Italia twice.

Also known as 'Captain Future', as he has long been earmarked as Francesco Totti's successor as Roma skipper, De Rossi stressed the importance of both coach Luis Enrique – "the best I have worked with" – and Totti in his decision to stay at the Stadio Olimpico.

"Totti never pushed me to renew my contract," he said, "but seeing him so happy at Roma for so many years was an important factor in my decision. I think it will be impossible to beat all his records but I want to win a Scudetto with Roma like he did."

De Rossi has also been a regular in the Italy team, hitting ten goals in 70 matches for the Azzurri, whom he helped land the FIFA World Cup in 2006.
