Italy round-up: Juventus hit heights

Juventus FC climbed to the top of Serie A as they won 2-1 at home to AC Fiorentina.

A goal from Alessandro del Piero lifted Juventus FC to the top of Serie A as they beat AC Fiorentina 2-1 on Saturday, while Milan AC's frustrating run continued in a home draw with Atalanta BC.

Decisive advantage
Del Piero scored the winning goal after 30 minutes of the first half after Fiorentina had failed to clear their lines following efforts from Pavel Nedved and Gianluca Pessotto.

Two points clear
Victory in the opening match of the weekend means Juve have gone two points ahead of AS Roma who play on Sunday at Brescia Calcio. Fiorentina remain second from bottom - and seven points from safety.

Trezeguet on target
David Trezeguet opened the scoring at the Delle Alpi stadium on eleven minutes. Lilian Thuram crossed to Trezeguet who headed the ball on to Nedved. The Czech Republic international returned the ball to the French striker who finished neatly on the turn past Alex Manninger.

Quick reply
However, the relegation-haunted visitors were quickly back into contention thanks to a goal from Brazilian striker Adriano. Domenico Morfeo laid the ball off for the Brazilian who promptly rounded Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and passed the ball into an empty net.

Tarozzi sent off
After Del Piero's strike, Fiorentina's hopes of a comeback were all but dashed 20 minutes from time with the dismissal of defender Andrea Tarozzi.

Goalless draw
At the San Siro, Milan played out a goalless draw with mid-table Atalanta - their fourth consecutive home game without a win. Carlo Ancelotti's side have now failed to win in six games, although they move up to fifth place ahead of Sunday's matches.
