Crash kills Chievo's Mayele

AC Chievo Verona's Jason Mayele was killed in a car crash near Verona on Saturday morning.

AC Chievo Verona midfield player Jason Mayele was killed in a car crash near Verona on Saturday morning.

Mark of respect
A 62-year-old woman was also killed after the car Mayele was travelling in collided head-on with another vehicle. Chievo responded immediately to the news of Mayele's death by postponing Saturday's game against Parma AC until 13 March. Chievo executive Marco Pacione expressed his sadness at the death and also thanked Parma for their "helpfulness in this moment of great sadness".

International career
The 26-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo international represented his country at the recent African Cup of Nations and had played an integral part in Chievo's successful first campaign in Serie A.

A second tragedy
Mayele, who had French citizenship, moved to Italy in 1999 when he signed for Cagliari Calcio before switching to Chievo in October last year. He is the second Serie A player to die in a car crash this year. On 23 January, Brescia Calcio defender Vittorio Mero was killed, also in the build-up to a game against Parma AC.
