Coaching change pays off as Chievo stop rot

David Di Michele's fortuitous 87th-minute strike against UC Sampdoria ended AC Chievo Verona's run of five straight defeats and gave Eugenio Corini victory in his first match in charge.

Eugenio Corini savoured victory in his first match in charge of AC Chievo Verona thanks to David Di Michele's late strike against UC Sampdoria.

The former Chievo midfielder was appointed on Tuesday following the dismissal of Domenico Di Carlo, a change which paid immediate dividends. On a run of five successive Serie A defeats, the hosts took the lead when Cyril Théréau darted through the Blucerchiati defence and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Sergio Romero on the cusp of half-time.

Although Enzo Maresca equalised just after the hour with a fine free-kick, Corini was not to be denied a winning start, Di Michele scoring his first of the season with a shot from outside the penalty area which slipped through Romero's raised hands.

In the late game, US Città di Palermo drew 1-1 at Genoa CFC. Luigi Giorgi headed Palermo, coached by former Rossoblu boss Gian Piero Gasperini, into a 14th-minute lead from Josip Iličić's cross. Marco Borriello (52) glanced in the equaliser after the visitors had only partially cleared a corner.

On Sunday, unbeaten leaders Juventus and SSC Napoli face AC Siena and Udinese Calcio respectively, while AC Milan meet FC Internazionale Milano.
