SSC Napoli saw off Genoa CFC 2-0 to cut Juventus' Serie A lead back to nine points, while ten-man ACF Fiorentina sealed a 2-2 draw with AC Milan to keep their UEFA Champions League aspirations alive.
After Juventus defeated Pescara Calcio on Saturday, the Partenopei maintained their slim Scudetto hopes as neat first-half finishes from Goran Pandev and Blerim Dzemaili earned a 2-0 win at the Stadio San Paolo. Edinson Cavani had a second-half penalty saved by Sébastien Frey, but Walter Mazzarri's men eased to victory.
Heading to Florence on a 12-game unbeaten league run, Milan went ahead after 14 minutes as Riccardo Montolivo found the net with a low shot. The home side's mission then became even more complicated when Nenad Tomović was dismissed six minutes before the interval, and Mathieu Flamini doubled the Rossoneri's lead by diverting in a second-half cross.
However, Antonio Nocerino brought down Adem Ljajić in the area moments later, and that allowed the Serbia midfielder to drive his penalty straight down the middle. Fiorentina levelled the scores when David Pizarro converted a powerful spot kick of his own with 17 minutes to go, but the fourth-placed Viola were unable to close the six-point gap to third-placed Milan.
FC Internazionale Milano's European hopes suffered a blow as they lost a remarkable game at home to Atalanta BC. After the Nerazzurri found themselves 3-1 up with 29 minutes remaining, Germán Denis struck a 12-minute hat-trick to earn the visitors a 4-3 win.
Elsewhere, US Città di Palermo boosted their survival hopes with a 3-1 win at UC Sampdoria, while Udinese Calcio made it 15 games unbeaten at home in Serie A as Antonio Di Natale hit two in a 3-1 success against AC Chievo Verona.
