Hernanes scored a sumptuous goal, missed one penalty and conceded another as ten-man S.S. Lazio, on top for the first 50 minutes, were forced to hold on for a 1-1 draw against AS Roma in an eventful Derby della Capitale.
It was all going so well for Lazio, and Hernanes in particular, as they led through the Brazilian's fine 16th-minute strike. Senad Lulić, who set up the goal after a surging run down the left following a Roma corner, almost made it 2-0 and then in the opening moments of the second period they were awarded a penalty. Hernanes, hitherto so cool and composed, stepped up and made good contact but sent his effort wide – the pendulum swung.
Roma suddenly awakened as an attacking force and Hernanes' transition from hero to villain was complete when he brought down Miralem Pjanić. Francesco Totti duly converted from the spot, a record-equalling ninth league goal in Rome derbies. Victory looked there for the taking when Giuseppe Biava received a second yellow card midway through the second half but, with Erik Lamela heading over from point-blank range, a winner proved elusive.
