ACF Fiorentina kept the pressure on AC Milan in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League place courtesy of a 2-0 win at Atalanta BC.
Vincenzo Montella's fourth-placed side are three points behind the Rossoneri, who on Sunday host SSC Napoli in a meeting of third against second.
David Pizarro opened the scoring from the spot in the 61st minute, Guglielmo Stendardo having handled as substitute Adem Ljajić attempted to cut inside. Pizarro, like he did last week in the Viola's 2-2 draw with Milan, dispatched the penalty.
Another replacement, Marcelo Larrondo, put the game beyond doubt, controlling Juan Cuadrado's pass and rifling beyond Andrea Consigli. A disappointing night for Atalanta ended with the dismissal of captain Germán Denis for a challenge on Pizarro.
AC Siena prevailed 3-2 at Pescara Calcio in a key fixture at the foot of the division. Siena, unbeaten in five, put three points between themselves and third-bottom US Città di Palermo thanks to Innocent Emeghara's 86th-minute strike, the Swiss international finishing off a counterattack by rolling in Salvador Agra's ball across goal.
Pescara, who had rallied from 2-0 down, look set for a quick return to the second tier. Nine points shy of safety, the Serie B champions have lost 12 of their last 13 league matches.
