The battle for third will go down to the final day after ten-man AC Milan drew while ACF Fiorentina sealed a 1-0 win against US Città di Palermo that consigned the visitors to relegation, on a day when AC Siena also went down.
Luca Toni slid in the only goal of the game for Fiorentina after 41 minutes from Juan Cuadrado's cross to temporarily move his side to within a point of third-placed Milan.
Victory for the Rossoneri at home to AS Roma in the evening kick-off would have secured Italy's final UEFA Champions League berth, but Sulley Muntari's 41st-minute dismissal changed the complexion of the game. Milan hung on for a 0-0 draw and Francesco Totti's late red card meant the teams ended with numerical parity too.
SSC Napoli were already guaranteed to finish second before facing Siena but clinched a 2-1 victory courtesy of Marek Hamšík's added-time winner. That was enough to relegate Siena to Serie B, as Genoa CFC – the only team they could have caught – secured a goalless draw with FC Internazionale Milano.
Elsewhere, Torino FC ensured their survival by sealing a 1-1 draw at AC Chievo Verona in Sunday's early game, while fifth-placed Udinese Calcio celebrated a seventh consecutive league win by defeating Atalanta BC 2-1, and S.S. Lazio, in sixth, saw off UC Sampdoria 2-0. Lastly, Bologna FC prevailed 2-0 at Parma FC.
