Italy round-up: Montella on fire

Vincenzo Montella continued his blistering form with a double as AS Roma stayed top of Serie A.

Vincenzo Montella continued his blistering form with two goals as AS Roma stayed top of Serie A by beating Atalanta BC 3-1 at the Olimpico stadium.

Four last week
The Italian international striker scored four against S.S. Lazio last week and grabbed the headlines with a double tonight. The visitors made a bright start but the league leaders soon stepped up a gear and took the lead after 17 minutes. Marcos Assunçao floated a free-kick into the box towards Montella, who was somewhat fortunate to see the ball bounce off his knee and wrong-foot goalkeeper Massimo Taibi as he tried to turn between two defenders.

Into the far corner
Roma's second came from an own goal on 29 minutes as Massimo Carrera turned Antonio Cassano's cross into his own net. Montella completed his evening's work in the 67th minute when he collected a Cassano pass, skipped past two defenders and fired a low right-footed shot across Taibi and into the far corner.

Doni nets consolation
Cristiano Doni netted a consolation goal for the visitors with seven minutes to go. The midfield player won an indirect free-kick in the area after he had been obstructed by Aldair, and Paolo Foglio rolled the ball aside for him to fire past Francesco Antonioli.
