Milan icon Nesta calls time on glittering career

Former AC Milan and Italy defender Alessandro Nesta, who won the UEFA Champions League twice, will hang up his boots at the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

Montreal Impact centre-back Alessandro Nesta will retire from professional football when the 2013 Major League Soccer (MLS) season concludes next week.

Capped 78 times by Italy and a FIFA World Cup winner in 2006, Nesta ended a ten-year association with AC Milan by moving to Canada in July last year. "I want to get into coaching. I plan to rest for a couple of months before learning the trade," said Nesta, who has made 31 league appearances for Montreal.

The 37-year-old former SS Lazio captain joined Milan ahead of the 2002/03 season and immediately helped the Rossoneri win the UEFA Champions League, repeating the trick in 2007, having lost the final two years earlier. Nesta also claimed the Scudetto twice with Milan, adding to the league title he won at Lazio, where he likewise lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The defender racked up a total of 417 Serie A appearances and 101 in the UEFA Champions League.
