FC Internazionale Milano failed to keep pace with fourth-placed ACF Fiorentina as they endured a frustrating evening against struggling AC Chievo Verona, but there was no stopping UC Sampdoria.
Inter's search for a first win of 2014 continues as Chievo produced a resilient defensive performance. Alberto Paloschi gave the visitors a sixth-minute lead with a crisp strike and though Yuto Nagotomo quickly responded as he he swept in Ricardo Álvarez's cross, the Nerazzurri could not find a winner. Rodrigo Palacio went close while Nagatomo did find the net for a second time, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Inter moved up to fifth but are now five points adrift of Fiorentina.
Udinese Calcio ended Inter's Coppa Italia ambitions last week but fared less well in an eventful match at Sampdoria as Siniša Mihajlović's side returned to winning ways. Éder was instrumental, earning and converting an early penalty, luring Allan into two first-half bookings and then making it 2-0 after the restart. Roberto Soriano and the visitors' Gabriel Silva also saw red before Daniele Gastaldello glanced in a late free-kick to make it 3-0, his first goal in over a year. Sampdoria rise above Udinese and into 12th.
