Hamšík regains Slovakian player award

SSC Napoli's Marek Hamšík has been named Slovakian player of the year for the third time at a ceremony in Trnava, with Róbert Vittek and Norbert Gyömbér also honoured.

Marek Hamšík was named Slovakian player of the year for the third time at a ceremony in Trnava on Monday night.

In the 21st annual poll, organised by daily newspaper Pravda in cooperation with Slovak Football Association (SFZ), the 26-year-old SSC Napoli midfielder regained the prize he took in 2009 and 2010 – finishing 28 votes clear of Liverpool FC defender Martin Škrtel, with Genoa CFC's Juraj Kucka in third. Hamšík's 2013 victory continues a seven-year duopoly of the award with Škrtel, who won in 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012.

"It is always a good feeling – I had the best season with Napoli last year," said Hamšík, who scored 11 goals and was Serie A assist leader on 14 as Napoli finished second in 2012/13. "Despite this, I am not able to say it was a perfect year. I missed some notable games with the national team."

ŠK Slovan Bratislava forward Róbert Vittek was crowned best player in the Slovak First League while the Peter Dubovský prize for best young player went to Calcio Catania defender Norbert Gyömbér.
