Roma and Napoli consolidate top-three spots

AS Roma remain three points clear in second spot as they edged Udinese Calcio 3-2 after Gonzalo Higuaín had struck at the death to earn SSC Napoli a slender victory.

AS Roma and SSC Napoli both cemented top-three places in Serie A with three points apiece, but they were pushed hard by Udinese Calcio and Torino FC respectively.

Francesco Totti set the capital club on their way, arrowing the ball into the corner after Gervinho's effort had been blocked. The Giallorossi doubled the lead eight minutes later, Mattia Destro combing neatly with Gervinho and showing fleet of foot to evade visiting goalkeeper Simone Scuffet before slotting in.

Giampiero Pinzi's left-footed strike put the brakes on Roma shortly after the interval, but Vassilis Torosidis re-established the status quo by finding the net with a another eye-catching effort from distance. Dušan Basta's emphatic volley from close range set up a jittery finale, though Roma held their nerve to win 3-2 and stay three points clear in second.

Closest pursuers Napoli left it late to overcome Torino and move ten points clear of fourth-placed ACF Fiorentina. The game in Turin seemed destined for a draw until Gonzalo Higuaín outstripped Kamil Glik and sent a shot squirming past Daniele Padelli.
