Coppa Italia winners SSC Napoli made sure of their place in next season's UEFA Champions League play-offs courtesy of a 3-0 home victory against Cagliari Calcio. The side they defeated in Saturday's final and their rivals for third spot, ACF Fiorentina, lost 4-3 to relegation-threatened US Sassuolo Calcio.
Napoli were 2-0 ahead by the break following Dries Mertens's 33rd-minute penalty and a sliding finish from Goran Pandev, who had been brought down by Daniele Conti for the spot kick. Pandev was felled in the box again early in the second period, with Cagliari goalkeeper Marco Silvestri being sent off as a result, but captain Marek Hamšík fired his effort against the crossbar.
Silvestri's replacement between the posts, Vlada Avramov then denied Pandev 60 seconds later only for Blerim Dzemaili, following up, to make it 3-0 to Rafael Benítez's team.
Sassuolo, meanwhile, gave their survival chances a huge shot in the arm with a stunning win in Florence as they moved out of the bottom three. A first-half hat-trick by 19-year-old Domenico Berardi, his third treble of the season, inspired the visitors. Giuseppe Rossi, making his first league appearance since 5 January because of a serious knee injury, was among the scorers for Fiorentina.
