• An entrepreneur in the publishing, print and information industries, Giancarlo Abete earned a degree in Economics and Business Studies at Sapienza University in Rome and served as a member of the Italian Parliament (1979-1992). He was also president of the Rome Entrepreneurs Association (1994-2000) and president of the National Travel and Tourism Federation - Confindustria (1999-2003).
• He started working with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as president of the Technical Department in 1988; president of the Professional League Serie C - Third Division (1990-1996); FIGC vice-president (1996-2000 and 2001-2006) and head of the Italian delegation at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which Italy won. He was elected FIGC President in April 2007 and joined the UEFA Executive Committee two years later. He became fifth UEFA vice-president in March 2011, and was re-elected for another term as FIGC president in January 2013.
