• A football player in his youth, Adilbek Jaxybekov initially sought his career in cinema, having earned his degree in economics from Moscow's All-Russian Cinematography State University; in 1995, he moved into politics, and was then elected to the Kazakhstani parliament.
• Later, while mayor of Astana city, he headed the Astana regional football association. Afterwards, he became president of the Football Federation of Kazakhstan (KFF) on 28 August 2007, while also heading the administration of the president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev; one of a number of senior positions in business and government Jaxybekov has occupied.
• Kazakhstan's minister of defence since June 2009, Jaxybekov has continued tackling match-fixing matters and illegal activity in football, with refereeing standards improving under his leadership. "We hear a lot about corruption," said Jaxybekov. "You can encounter it everywhere, but Kazakhstan is one of the countries that fights against it. There is corruption in football too, and we will fight that as well."
