Girls take grassroots stage in Liechtenstein

UEFA Grassroots Day in Liechtenstein was notable for the organisation in Vaduz and Eschen of an inaugural girls football event by the Liechtenstein Football Association.

The Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) celebrated its first-ever girls football day on UEFA Grassroots Day.

The event, staged to coincide with the Europe-wide promotion of grassroots football on Wednesday 19 May, took place across two venues in the Alpine principality, namely the towns of Vaduz and Eschen. The main activity of the day was a three-hour game of random football – so called because the number of players on each of the two teams changed either every two minutes with the roll of a dice, or with each goal scored. So the match could turn from five-a-side to one against six, according to the dice. In Vaduz more than 100 goals were scored.

Seventeen girls took part in the Eschen edition, with another 16 involved in Vaduz. The tournament was supervised by senior students from local grammar schools who made sure everybody played by the rules and also provided refreshments. Other activities included skills sessions focused on passing and finishing, and two normal matches which were played by the Laws of the Game.
