Goals from Oleksandr Suchu and Evgheni Gorodeţchi earned FC Iskra-Stal a historic 2-1 win against FC Olimpia Balti as they won their maiden Moldovan Cup.
A close contest was always anticipated in light of Iskra-Stal having pipped Olimpia to a fifth-place finish in the league on goal difference. Iskra-Stal started the brighter, and were rewarded for their dominance when Suchu headed in Gorodeţchi's corner on 11 minutes. Olimpia soon levelled, however, thanks to Gheorghe Ovseannicov's long-range strike.
Three minutes later Gorodeţchi's speculative free-kick put Iskra-Stal ahead for the second time. In a second half of few chances, Jean-Robens Jerome went closest for Olimpia, hitting the post from close range. Iskra-Stal's reward is a place in next season's UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
Isrka-Stal coach Valeriy Chaliy told UEFA.com: "I'm full of emotions. Everything was literally flying in the changing room. We played as planned before the game. We wanted to put our opponents under a lot of pressure early on and score a quick goal − and we succeeded. I consider this win a historic occasion for our club and city of Ribnita."
Nicolae Rudac, the Isrka-Stal skipper, added: "I fully agree with our coach. It is a really big win. Everybody wrote us off before the season, but we proved our ability. We deserved to win."
