Champions Birkirkara FC are full of optimism for the new season after beating Hibernians FC 3-2 to win the Maltese Super Cup.
"I have always said that this team has its own unique character," said coach Paul Zammit. "I am sure that if we keep up this spirit we can do great things together again." Goals from Demba Touré, Frank Temile and rising star Zach Muscat, 19, gave Birkirkara a 3-0 lead at half-time, but Hibernians made a game of it after the break, with Clayton Failla converting from the penalty spot before Andrew Cohen struck in the 77th minute.
The Stripes held on to clinch the first trophy of the campaign, with their big summer recruit from FC Dynamo Kyiv, Temile, telling UEFA.com: "We have a very good squad with strength in depth and this augurs well for the coming season." Birkirkara meet Rabat Ajax FC in their opening league game on 17 August.
