Rudar deny Mogren to retain Montenegrin Cup

Coach Nebojša Vignjević said FK Rudar Pljevlja "deserved a bit of luck" after surviving 105 minutes with ten men to claim their third Montenegrin Cup with a shoot-out win against FK Mogren.

FK Rudar Pljevlja beat league leaders FK Mogren 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Podgorica to win their second successive Montenegrin Cup, their third in total.

We were in a very bad situation after 15 minutes, but the players showed character. We were lucky at the end, but we deserved a bit of luck

Level at 1-1 at full time, then 2-2 after the additional 30 minutes, Rudar converted all five of their spot kicks, while Igor Matić hit Mogren's fourth over the bar. "We scored twice, hit the woodwork three times and still lost, but that's football," said Mogren coach Branislav Milačić. "The luckier team won."

Rudar prevailed despite behind reduced to ten men on 15 minutes when goalkeeper Miljan Mijatović received a straight red card for bringing down Mogren captain Petar Grbić in the box. Ardijan Djokaj fired in the resulting penalty, but Nedjelko Vlahović equalised with a powerful shot on 53 minutes, and Grbić was then dismissed for a late challenge on Vladan Adžić to even up the numbers as well as the scores.

In extra time, Veselin Bojić put Rudar ahead from the spot after Draško Božović fouled Blažo Igumanović, but a spectacular Marko Ćetković brought it back to 2-2 and penalties where the underdogs prevailed.

"We put in a great effort to beat a serious opponent," said Rudar boss Nebojša Vignjević. "We were in a very bad situation after 15 minutes, but the players showed character. We were lucky at the end, but we deserved a bit of luck."

Rudar are assured third in the league, while Mogren are level on points at the top of the table with FK Budućnost Podgorica going into Saturday's final round of fixtures. A win against FK Mornar Bar would secure a second title.
