PSV Eindhoven kept their title hopes alive on Saturday with a 4-0 win at NEC Nijmegen.
Dramatic second half
A goalless first half gave little indication of what was to come as the visitors devastated NEC with an irresistible display of attacking football as PSV surged up to third place in the table, just two points adrift of joint-leaders AFC Ajax and Feyenoord.
Dennis Rommedahl opened the scoring for PSV seven minutes into the second half, stabbing the ball home from inside the penalty area after Georgi Gakhokidze's pass had found him unmarked in the area.
PSV take over
Two minutes later, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink doubled PSV's advantage, heading home from Rommedahl's cross. Rommedahl was involved again in PSV's third, providing the pass from which Gakhokidze drove the ball past NEC goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar from 15 metres.
The suffering was not quite over for shell-shocked NEC, though, as Vennegoor of Hesselink grabbed his second of the evening with six minutes to go. Gakhokidze found Rommedahl with an exquisite long pass, and he laid the ball off for the striker to hammer the ball home from close range.
Heerenveen head for glory
SC Heerenveen also had a good day's work on Saturday and did their hopes of a place in Europe no harm with a 3-0 win against Willem II. Two goals from Swedish international Stefan Selakovic either side of half-time gave the home side a decisive advantage at the Abe Lenstra stadium before winger Jeffrey Talan scored a third after 71 minutes.
More misery for Roda
In Saturday's other game, Roda JC slipped further towards the relegation zone with a 2-1 defeat at De Graafschap. Hans van der Haar gave the home side a decisive advantage with two goals either side of half-time, and although Ioannis Anastasiou pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after 62 minutes, the Kerkrade side could not find an equaliser.
