McClaren moves on from Twente post

Steve McClaren said FC Twente are "too big in my heart to stand in the way of their progress" after announcing his decision to step down from his second spell at the helm.

FC Twente are in the hunt for a new coach after Steve McClaren's decision to end his second stint in charge.

McClaren reassumed the reins at the Enschede club in January last year, having previously guided the club to their maiden Eredivisie title in 2009/10. His most recent spell at the helm has not been quite as successful, with De Tukkers finishing eighth in the Dutch top flight last term. McClaren leaves the side in fifth place, six points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven with ten games to go. Twente, joint leaders at the winter break, have failed to win in six fixtures since, drawing four and losing two.

"After the defeat by Heerenveen on Saturday the FC Twente board and I tried to find a solution to the difficult period the team have been going through," said the 51-year-old former England manager. "After much discussion and deliberation we have agreed it's in the best interest of the club that I leave. We agree the club is bigger than any one individual and Twente are too big in my heart to stand in the way of their progress.

"I leave a proud man to have managed Twente; it's brought me many good memories and one of the greatest days in my career when winning the title in 2010." Assistant coach Alfred Schreuder has taken over as caretaker coach and will be assisted by Boudewijn Pahlplatz and Youri Mulder. McClaren previously managed Middlesbrough FC, VfL Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest FC.
